In this course you’ll learn how to understand accounting and bookkeeping fundamentals, prepare and lodge business activity statements (BAS), prepare financial reports, establish and maintain payroll systems, develop and use emotional intelligence in a professional context, apply ethical frameworks and principals and use industry leading software’s MYOB or Xero.

Successful completion of the course allows you to become a certified bookkeeper, a registered BAS Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board (other criteria applies), a payroll officer or an account assistant. You can also use it to pursue higher education such as the Diploma of Accounting or Diploma of Payroll.


Course Modules

Our course has been specifically built by industry experts who have real-world practical experience and knowledge and decades of experience in the industry. This is designed to give you the best-practical skills and knowledge to make your job-ready from the moment you graduate.

Fundamentals of accounting including:

  • processing debit and credit transactions
  • preparing and understanding financial reports such as balance sheets, profit, and loss statements, and end-of-period reports
  • extracting and administering interim reports and ledgers.

This module includes the following units of competency:

  • BSBFIA401 Prepare Financial Reports
  • FNSACC311 Process financial transactions and extract interim reports
  • FNSACC312 Administer subsidiary accounts and ledgers
  • Conduct business activities using digital accounting systems including system set-up, utilisation and problem solving.
  • Digital communication via email and workflow management.

This module includes the following units of competency:

  • FNSACC416 Set up and operate a computerised accounting system
  • BSBSMB412 Introduce cloud computing into business operations
  • Work effectively in the accounting and bookkeeping industry by successfully tracking the incoming and outgoing finances of a company.
  • Deliver services to customers and produce necessary business documents, including account statements, newsletters, project reviews, proposals, reports and web pages.

This module includes the following units of competency:

  • BSBCUS301 Deliver and monitor a service to customers
  • FNSACC408 Work effectively in the accounting and bookkeeping industry
  • Perform basic numerical calculations and use MS Excel to perform simple calculations.
  • Check results against accumulated data such as cost and price related calculations, Goods and Services Tax (GST), Income Tax and interest on loans.
  • Understand and use spreadsheets in an accounting application.

This module includes the following units of competency:

  • FNSACC313 Perform financial calculations
  • BSBITU402 Develop and use complex spreadsheets
  • Understand and complete a Business Activity Statement (BAS) and an Installment Activity Statement (IAS) containing GST classification and Pay as You Go withholding and instalments.
  • Utilise accounting payroll systems including payroll transactions, Australian taxation law and Australian Superannuation.

This module includes the following units of competency:

  • FNSTPB401 Complete business activity and instalment activity statements
  • FNSTPB402 Establish and maintain payroll systems
  • Understand and implement emotional intelligence within the financial services industry.
  • Business ethics in the financial services industry.
  • Ethical decision-making.

This module includes the following units of competency:

  • BSBPEF502 Develop and use emotional intelligence
  • FNSINC504 Apply ethical frameworks and principles to make and act upon decisions

Course information

The Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping course is comprised of self-paced modules, delivered through the Ab² digital learning portal. This means that you could earn a valuable industry-recognised qualification and become job ready, in just six months.

A part-time study approach (10-15 hours a week) will take six to 12 months to complete, with up to 390 study hours, depending on industry experience.

There are no prerequisites for this course. However, once we receive your enrolment, an Ab2 Student Experience Advisor will be in touch to ensure that this training is the right program for you.

For students who do not have an equal or higher-level qualification, you will need to complete a language, literacy, and numeracy quiz, which can be taken online.

To successfully complete this course, you will need sound computer skills, as well as access to:

  • a working computer with Microsoft Office
  • an internet connection
  • a smart phone
  • a video camera or web camera

If you have prior skills and knowledge built through previous learning, education, or

employment experience, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL) and you may not have to study all of the course modules.

This qualification will allow you to further your study journey towards diploma and advanced diploma courses, while also providing you with free student membership to the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Australia.
